Initiated in the spring of 2013 with funds raised by Lillooet Food Matters, the portable Community Seed Library was designed to encourage and support the creation of a sustainable local food system through cooperation among gardeners and seed savers. The library contains seeds for the community to share and grow. Like a regular library, the seeds borrowed must be returned. The library is set up for people to check out 5 packages of seeds at a time, with the request that they return a portion of the saved seed to the library for others to use. The seeds in the library are free for the taking, and come with easy-to-follow seed saving guidelines.
The library made its first appearance at the Lillooet Farmer's Market in May of 2013 and was received with much interest. It was gratifying to see seeds being taken home for growing out. This year some of the seeds from the Library will be available at The Hub on Main Street beside the Post Office. The majority are held at Shona’s home and can be accessed through lillooetseedlibrary@shaw.ca or Facebook @lillooetseedlendinglibrary.
Thanks to funding from the Lillooet Community Foundation, in 2013 Lillooet Food Matters purchased a community-sized seed winnower for cleaning seeds all sizes of seeds. It will be available at the Seed Swap and the Farmer's Market for use by growers.
